25th Anniversary Sale

December 1 marks Uncle Edgar's 25th anniversary, and we're celebrating with a huge sale. Come into Uncle Edgar's or Uncle Hugo's and save 10% off everything except gift certificates. A discount card will save you even more--you'll get both the 10% savings from the sale and the 10% savings from the discount card. Come in and save on new books, used books, calendars, jigsaw puzzles, audiobooks, music, magazines, model kits, etc. (Sale prices apply to in-store purchases, but not to mail orders.)
The 25th Anniversary Sale lasts Thursday, December 1st through Sunday, December 11th--giving you two weekends to take advantage of the sale.
We will also be having our annual inventory reduction sale December 26-31, but that will feature deep discounts on things we really, really want to get rid of. It will not be a store-wide sale, like the 25th Anniversary Sale.

Neighborhood Update

By the time you receive this, the road construction should be finished for the season. There is supposed to be a public ceremony on Monday, November 21 to celebrate the buses returning to their old routes. We still don't know when the parking meters will be re-installed, we're not sure if we will have the new, fancy street lights this fall, or will make do with temporary lights until next spring. The Sheraton Hotel across the street is supposed to open mid-December. Allina employees are supposed to start moving into the old Sears building at the beginning of December.
All of the businesses in the area have been hurt badly by the road construction on both Chicago and Lake. Our business was down somewhat most months April through September, but was down very dramatically in October. Thanks to the people who went to the considerable trouble to continue to shop here during construction. People who have not been buying from us recently are urged to send some business our way.

Holiday Gift Ideas

Our single most popular gift option continues to be our gift certificate. We can issue one in any amount. It can be used at either or both stores. It can even be used for mail order, and it can be purchased by phone or fax (if you have Mastercard, Visa, or Discover Card), and we can mail it either to the purchaser or the recipient, or we can just enter the balance on a credit file here at the store, so there's no risk of the gift certificate being lost.
Calendars are another popular gift item, and by now we've seen most of the calenders we'll receive this year. (All calendars are standard wall calendars unless otherwise noted.) This year we only received 2 of the Star Trek calendars, Star Trek Enterprise ($12.99) and Star Trek Stardate ($13.99, page-a-day). We also have 2 Tolkien calendars, Hobbit ($14.95, art by Tolkien) and Art of Lord of the Rings ($13.99, art from the movies). We also have 2 Harry Potter calendars, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ($13.99, drawings from the movie) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ($16.99, spiral bound hardcover, a week per page with stills from the movie). For dragon-lovers, we have 3 calendars, Dragonology ($14.99, based on the book), Dragon ($12.95, 12 paintings by Bleu Turrell), and Dragons ($12.99, 16 months by Ciruelo).
Fantasy art calendars include Frazetta ($13.95), The Fantasy Art of Keith Parkinson ($12.99), The World of Michael Parkes ($12.99), Brom ($12.95) and Born of the Night ($12.95, gothic paintings by Joseph Vargo).
Humorous page-a-day calendars include Close to Home ($11.99), Disney Days ($13.99), For Better of for Worse ($11.99), Fox Trot ($11.99), George W. Bushisms ($11.99, a different dumb thing said by the Pres for every day of the year-we didn't order this, but somebody in the warehouse threw a bunch into our box instead of something we did order), Get Fuzzy ($11.99), Non Sequitur ($11.99), The Onion Ad Nauseam: Fanfare for the Area Man ($11.95), The Onion: The Best of Yesterday's News ($11.95), The Trivial Simpsons ($12.99) and Zits ($11.99).
Other calendars include Dilbert: I Barely Have Time to Avoid the Work I Already Have ($12.99, spiral-bound desk), The Far Side ($12.99, spiral-bound desk), Get Fuzzy ($13.99) and The Simpsons Fun Calendar ($12.99).

Signed books can be divided into two categories: those that arrive from the publisher in special, limited, signed editions (i.e., expensive) and those that arrive from the publisher as normal editions that we get an author to sign (which we then sell at the same price as an un-signed copy). Uncle Hugo's carries a number of the special editions, including David Brin's Earth ($125), Orson Scott Card's Memory of Earth ($200) and Shadow of the Giant ($200), William Gibson & Bruce Sterling's Difference Engine ($125), Terry Goodkind's Chainfire ($200) and Pillars of Creation ($200), Greg Hildebrandt's The Tolkien Years ($125), Robert Jordan's Knife of Dreams ($250), Greg Ketter's (editor) Shelf Life: Fantastic Stories Celebrating Bookstores ($75, signed by editor and all 8 contributors), Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver ($200), The Confusion ($200), and The System of the World ($200), Star Wars: Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn (1st of his trilogy, $125).

(Note to collectors: This list of signed books is updated once a year for our December Newsletter. Our signed books are also listed on Abebooks.com, and that listing is sometime updated as often as 3 or 4 times per week, depending on how quickly authors are coming through the store and how quickly signed books are leaving the store. Our listing there can be reached by going to http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BooksBrowsePL?vendorclientid=3358938 and scroll down to "catalogs" and click on "Signed". That listing has much more information, but is also more time-consuming to use, and has the sf and mystery titles mixed together.)
